Course objectives

Aim of this module is to complement students' interdisciplinary preparation in the tourism sector with targeted environmental science contents taking care to distinguish cogent from voluntary tools.

Transfer the concept of scientific model and how to use it in various contexts and, in particular, in the context of environmental science. Develop the concept of the environment divided into compartments with their physical, chemical and biological characteristics. Guide to consider the environmental compartments as communicating entities that allow the circulation of matter and its transformation on different time scales. Be able to identify biotic and abiotic processes.

Transfer the concept of environmental resources divided into renewable and non-renewable. Know the many natural threats from the environment and the anthropic threats (human impact) to the stability and environmental health.

Transfer the concept of Quality with its important implications in various sectors of human activities. Knowing how to distinguish the cogent field from the voluntary field. Know the structure of a quality system and the concept of voluntary quality assurance. Be able to identify quality models for the environment (ecomanagement) related to systems and products.

Results of learning outcomes

At the end of this module the students will be able to:

  • approach the study of the environment and its many dynamics with the flexible and updatable tool of the scientific model;
  • analyse the main environmental phenomena with the tool of the compartments;
  • distinguish biotic from abiotic phenomena;
  • understand that the environment is a reserve of resources and threats and that not everything that is natural can automatically be considered good rather than useful;
  • recognise the norms of the voluntary field that aim at quality from the mandatory rules of the cogent field that aim to guarantee safety and stability in society.

Program

Concept of scientific model. Use of the model's tool in various contexts and, in particular, in the context of environmental science. Environment into compartments: hydrosphere, atmosphere, lithosphere, biosphere and technosphere. Physical, chemical and biological characteristics of compartments. Circulation of matter and its transformation into environmental compartments. Biotic and abiotic processes.

Review of environmental resources renewable and non-renewable. Review of natural threats from the environment and the anthropic threats to the environment.

Concept of quality and its implications in various sectors and for commerce. Cogent field and voluntary field. Voluntary standardisation and related bodies such as ISO. Standardisation, accreditation and certification. Structure of a quality system. Concept of quality assurance. Quality models for the environment recognised worldwide: models of system (ecomanagement) and models to label eco-friendly products.

Course delivery

The method of teaching delivery will be characterised by frontal lectures delivered in presence.

The attendance is optional, anyway strongly recommended.

Learning assessment methods

The final assessment of the module will be based on an oral verification. If the students enrolled in the course exceed the indicative number of 30, it will be possible to consider replacing the oral exam with other forms of evaluation.

A written group report, or several, could be agreed upon to delve deeper into course topics. The oral exam could start with a discussion on a report.
