Course objectives

The aim of this course is to provide basic knowledge of the main topics concerning Art History in modern and contemporary age (the leading artists and the crucial artistic developments) together with the basic instruments to understand and explain the artworks in their historical and cultural context.

The aim of the course is to provide basic knowledge about film history and language and to give an overall view of the main advances in film technology (the advent of sound films, the use of color in cinema, etc.). Further aims are to enhance the background knowledge about films by taking a broader look at the multiple potential uses of the filmic medium (scientific, documentary, etc.) and to develop the basic tools concerning film heritage, its preservation and enhancement.

By the end of the course, it is necessary to have acquired basic knowledge on Modern and Contemporary Art History through some important themes and their relations with major historical and cultural events. Students will have developed a critical approach to the main topics covered in class and will be able to handle the fundamental tools of the discipline.

By the end of the course, it is necessary to have acquired basic knowledge on film history, with a specific focus on the main technological achievements in the cinema field. The students will demonstrate an understanding of the variety of the intended purposes of films (scientific, documentary, narrative, biographic, etc.) and will be able to produce critical reflections on the audiovisual materials viewed during the lessons.

Starting from a general introduction, the course will focus on some case studies from the late 15th century to the contemporary era, giving attention to the key figures and artworks and to the development of Italian art in a broader context.

The course will focus on film history from a chronological perspective, giving attention to the development of technology and leading or alternative film styles through ages and nations (the silent movie era; the advent of sound films; the avant-gardes; etc.).

Please note that the first two lessons with Francesca Romana Gaja will last only 2 hours: Wednesday 2nd November and Wednesday 9th November, from 4 to 6 pm.
Starting from Wednesday 16th November all the lessons last 4 hours, from 2 to 6 pm.
