Course objectives

Aim of this module is to complement student’s interdisciplinary preparation in the tourism sector with targeted environmental science contents, mainly aimed at identifying those natural resources usable to obtain energy.

Transfer knowledge about the characteristics of the environment for which it is possible to find materials suitable for use as fuel to produce energy (mainly heat).

Develop a vision of natural phenomena in terms of process for which it is possible to conceive the production of energy as a transformative process (mainly a conversion of chemical energy stored in chemical bonds in heat).

Transfer knowledge about the environmental dynamics underlying the transformation of fundamental substances.

Results of learning outcomes

At the end of this module the students will be able to:

  • approach the study of the environmental phenomena and its many dynamics;
  • identify those natural materials based on carbon taht can be used as fuels;
  • identify those natural processes that allow the cyclical transformation of carbonaceous substances over time;
  • distinguish between the terms fuel and oxidizer and their role in combustion;
  • distinguish between the terms fuel and propellant and their use;
  • be acculturated with respect to variuos types of fossil coals;
  • be acculturated with respect to variuos types of liquid and air fuels and biofuels;
  • know the ISO quality standard on energy.

Program

Environment and energy sources: a review. Classical energy sources based on carbon. Finding fuels in the environment and environmental logic underlying fuel depots. Characteristics of environmental compartments. Compartments of accumulation and use. Biogeochemical cycles: concept and environmental dynamics of natural substances. Carbon cycle. Photosynthesis chlorophyll: chemical process of organication of inorganic carbon (CO2) through solar energy.

Exploitation of environmental carbonaceous organic substances for energy purposes. The combustion process and the reacting substances involved, combustible and oxidizing. Combustion products and by-products. Fossil fuels produced by the anaerobic decomposition of plant and animal organic materials. Different types of fossil coals. Petroleum and derivatives obtained by distillation. Air and liquid hydrocarbons at room temperature. Fuels. Propellants. Explosives. Biofuels: bioethanol, biodiesel and vegetable oils. ISO quality standard on energy.

Course delivery

The method of teaching delivery will be characterised by frontal lectures delivered in presence.

The attendance is optional, anyway strongly recommended.

Learning assessment methods

The final assessment of the module will be based on an oral verification. If the students enrolled in the course exceed the indicative number of 30, it will be possible to consider replacing the oral exam with other forms of evaluation.

A written group report, or several, could be agreed upon to delve deeper into course topics. The oral exam could start with a discussion on a report.
