Course objectives

The course aims to enable students to

  • understand the main substantive themes of international cultural heritage law, especially intangible cultural heritage;
  • explore European and transnational law about destination management and territorial planning;
  • appraise legal methods and instruments for the market development of cultural, tourism and art assets.

Results of learning outcomes

Throughout class discussions and suggested readings students will be able:

  • to gain a familiarity with the international rules for the protection and preservation of the cultural heritage; 
  • to be able to analyze critically the various legal instruments for the protection and the promotion of cultural intangible assets and their socio-economic development.

Program

  1. International law about cultural heritage, mainly the trade in cultural objects, the restitution of stolen or looted artworks and the protection of cultural property.
  2. European law and policy governing: urban planning, peri-urban ecosystems and rural development.
  3. Law regulating the tourism industry in Europe and agency and distribution, passenger transport, traveller accommodation, activities and attractions.
  4. Law and cultural market with a specific focus on multimedia production, art in public spaces, special commissioned street art projects (examples of success and economic impact) and street art between legality and illegality.

Learning assessment methods

Attending Students are going to be evalutated throught corse work, partecitpation into class and seminars and through a final written paper.

No attending students will sit for 90 minutes written exam on the entire syllabus. Questions will be either in the form of short essay or short open answers.
