Course objectives

The course deals with the exploration of the relationship between State-building processes and the making of the idea of nation and of national identities in XIXth century Europe. Starting from a comparison of different national cases, the lessons will explain the political use of history, memories, heroes and martyrs, representations of the Italian nationhood, investigating the formation of national myths, the preservation of homeland memories, the selective organization of sources, the setting up of the first historical exhibitions and historical museums. The laboratories will then focus on the ways to enhance historical heritage, in particolar through the use of audiovisuals.

Results of learning outcomes

By the end of the course students are expected to have acquired - generale knowledge about principal and crucial events, characters, processes in XIXth Century european state-building and nation-building processes
- Individual ability in understanding and analyzing historical changes both of long and short term and also in comparing case studies of different geographical areas

- Knowledge of Modern History timeline, and basic general knowledge of the main historiographical schools and methods; learning of principal historical categories
- Competence in retracing class debates, grown with personal observations

- Skills in reflecting on and providing modern ways to to enhance historical heritage

Program

Symbols, monuments, memories, heroes and martyrs of the homeland: the storytelling of nation-building in XIXth Century  

The course aims to give an account of XIXth Century european processes of nation-building, focusing in particular on the case study of the Italian nationhood. The lessons will review the most important Italian monuments; historical collections and museums; fighters, martyrs, heroes and heroins of the Italian unification. Through audiovisual sources, the course will highlight modern ways to enhance historical heritage, starting from territorial examples. A few lessons will be held by the visiting professor Olivier Christin (Université de Neuchâtel, Swiss), expert in the field of "Art and Iconoclasm in the Public Space".

Course delivery

The course, which last 48 hours in total, is held with the help of multimedia materials. Possible educational visits to local Museums, Archives and historical sites are also contemplated.

All lessons are taught in presence and attendance is highly recommended. Students who are unable to attend face-to-face lessons will be guaranteed the opportunity to use teaching material through the Moodle platform.

Learning assessment methods

As part of the exam, students will give a personal written presentation choosing and examining a singular case study. In the written exam students must answer to questions related to the contents of the lessons and to the exam bibliography. The evaluation of the exam is expressed in 30/30.
