Course objectives

The teaching is directed to provide the skills needed to address historical and methodological issues of Art History in the modern and contemporary period, but particularly to provide general informations on how to organize an art exhibition: the birth of a project, the role of the curators, the role of the museums hosting and organizing the initiative, the role of all other people involved (registrar, art handlers, architect/exhibition designer etc.).

Students will develop the tools to navigate museums in the present and distinguish the diverse roles and functions within these institutions, such as the director and the board, curatorial assistants, registrars, the press office, the corporate membership and development office, and the marketing office. They will also familiarize themselves with the various functions of contemporary Kunsthalle (temporary exhibition centers), commercial galleries, and international large-scale exhibitions such as biennials and triennials.

The classes will introduce students to key players in the contemporary art system, providing insights into the roles of curators, museum directors, collectors, and art critics. The course will also touch on the history of curating, unveiling both theoretical and practical aspects of this field. Overall, the course aims to illuminate the interconnectedness of cultural theory and art practice.
